CAMDEN - A BRIEF HISTORY
The Camden imprint was launched originally as a low-priced Label
by RCA in the 1960s. It was subsequently licensed to Pickwick in
the UK and for many years it held a dominant position in the market
place.
The roster of RCA artists that appear on Camden across the ensuing
years are too numerous to mention here. Suffice to say that such
legendary names as Elvis Presley, Mario Lanza, Glenn Miller,
Dolly Parton, Jim Reeves, etc were released regularly on Camden,
which, in those days, retailed at today's equivalent of between
99p and £1.99p!
Following the acquisition of RCA Records by the Bertlesmann
Music Group, the Camden Label was brought back into the Company
at the first opportunity. The London office of BMG was subsequently
charged with developing the Camden Catalogue for the World and from
a modest handful of titles in 1996, the Catalogue has been expanded
to over 200 titles and sales are now measured in the millions.
Once the low price Camden label had firmly established itself,
we decided it was a good time to start up our mid-price label, Camden
Deluxe, to cater for those artists that demand more time and
a greater attention to detail. With Deluxe, we have focussed on
digital re-mastering and packaging quality, we have often involved
the artists themselves in their own re-releases and have uncovered
many rare and unreleased recordings along the way. Best Sellers
have included 'A Fistful
of Sounds' and 'The Very Best
of Lou Reed'
